Terms of use
Using this site means accepting these terms. They are short because the service is simple: a free tool that runs in your browser, plus reference pages about how text watermarking works.
1. What the service is
WatermarkCheck provides a browser-based utility that detects invisible and ambiguous Unicode characters in text you supply and produces a cleaned copy, together with editorial pages describing AI watermarking and hidden characters. It is free, requires no account, and processes your text entirely on your own device.
2. What the service is not
- It is not an AI detector. It cannot tell you whether text was written by a person or a model, and it does not try.
- It cannot remove statistical watermarks such as Anthropic's token-selection mark or Google's SynthID. Those are embedded in word choice, not in characters. See the explainer.
- It does not rewrite, paraphrase or edit your wording. Cleaned output contains the same words in the same order.
- It is not legal, academic or professional advice. Pages describing regulation are explanatory summaries, not a substitute for reading the regulation or taking advice on your situation.
3. Permitted use
You may use the tool for any lawful purpose, personal or commercial, including on text belonging to your employer or clients, subject to your own obligations regarding that text. No attribution is required.
You must not use the site to break the law, to interfere with its operation or availability, to misrepresent what it does, or to present its output as evidence of authorship, the tool makes no authorship claims and cannot support one.
4. Your text and your responsibility
You are responsible for the text you paste. Because processing happens in your browser, we never receive it, and we therefore cannot recover it, verify what you did with it, or be responsible for the consequences of using cleaned output.
Keep your own copy of anything important before cleaning it. The tool is designed to preserve visible content exactly, but you should verify the output for anything that matters, particularly text in scripts using invisible characters as orthography, such as Persian, Urdu, Indic scripts, Khmer, Korean and braille content. If you find a case where the cleaner alters such text incorrectly, please report it; we treat those as priority bugs.
5. Availability
The site is provided as it is, without any guarantee of availability, uptime or continued existence. We may change, restrict or discontinue any part of it at any time. Since the tool runs client-side, a page already loaded in your browser will keep working even if the site is unavailable.
6. No warranty
The service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy or non-infringement. We aim for the reference pages to be correct and we correct errors promptly when they are reported, but we do not warrant that any page is complete or current at the moment you read it. Vendor pages carry a "Last verified" date for exactly this reason.
7. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for loss of data, profits or business, arising from your use of or inability to use the site. Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, and nothing in them affects rights you have under mandatory consumer protection law in your country of residence.
8. Intellectual property
The text, tables, design and code of this site belong to its operators. You may quote from it with attribution and a link. You may not republish substantial parts of it as your own, and you may not present a copy of the tool as an independent service.
Product names and trademarks, including Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek and Perplexity, belong to their respective owners and are used here descriptively, to identify the products discussed. This site is independent and not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any of them.
9. Third-party links
Links to external sources are provided so you can check our claims. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content, and a link is not an endorsement.
10. Privacy and cookies
How your data is handled is described in the privacy policy and the cookies policy, which form part of these terms.
11. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The date at the top shows when they last changed, and continuing to use the site after a change means accepting the updated version. Material changes affecting how your data is handled are also reflected in the privacy policy and, where consent is involved, we ask again rather than relying on an earlier choice.
12. Contact and disputes
If you have a complaint or a dispute about this site, please raise it first by email at [email protected]. Most issues are factual and can be resolved by correcting a page. Your statutory rights, including any right to bring proceedings in the courts of your country of residence where applicable law provides for it, are unaffected.
